Scope of practice for dentists: The Dental Board of Australia Guidelines:
Please note that The Dental Board of Australia (“the board”) has published guidelines for what they expect of dentists when using cosmetic injectables in their practice. You can find them on the AHPRA website, but rest assured we will guide you in your scope of practice as a dentist. It is always important that you only proceed with treatment that you are insured for, are competent to undertake and have training in.

Why dentists should learn botox?
Dentists have a detailed university education in the head and neck areas and are prime candidates to include facial rejuvenation as part of their overall treatment plans. Much like painters studying their painting, dental professionals regularly examine the brush strokes, techniques, geometry, tones and style. It is all of the individual factors that produce the end piece. If the end piece is the whole face then facial aesthetics is a logical progression, or addition to smile design. Additionally, dentists make an excellent clinician choice because they:- Have specialized university education and focus their careers on the anatomy of the head and neck. Cosmetic injecting courses for dentists help to improve patient results
- Understand the importance of reviewing medical history and performing a complete exam
- Are highly trained and experienced in providing facial injections
- Work in a clinical setting
- Don’t delegate the treatment to a staff member or administrator
- Understand the importance of asepsis and always use sterile instruments or ‘once only’ disposables
- Have appropriate insurance
- Can numb areas of treatment, and Botox courses for grinding can help your patient results last.
- Can discuss and treat all aesthetic patient concerns regarding their teeth, smile and face.
Which is the best cosmetic injecting course to do in Australia?
There are many cosmetic injecting courses for dentists in Australia. Our head educator is a dentist, so she has hands-on, real-life experience in the cosmetic injecting and dentistry space. Not only that, when you come to our cosmetic injecting course in Melbourne, you will visit our accredited dental practice and see how we integrate the business of cosmetic injectables with a dental practice.
The best cosmetic injecting course for dentists in Australia is not in a hotel, but based in an accredited dental practice and clinical environment. Our ethos is Safety through Anatomy, best Technique and best Product choices. This is the ATP approach. The most suitable cosmetic injecting course for dentists will also include advice on insurance, how to structure your appointment and what treatments you can do within your scope as a dentist.

What techniques will I learn?
At Dermal Distinction training academy, we offer a full pathway for cosmetic injecting courses for dentists. Most dentists start with the Level 1: Complete Lip Artistry, as lip filler is the most commonly requested cosmetic facial procedure. However this course is fully inclusive of botox techniques that compliment lip filler and add to the result.
Our educational content is thoughtfully created and structured to allow dentists to be successful in achieving predictable results - with little to no side effects. To do this, practitioners require a deep understanding of underlying anatomy, as well as a specific treatment and injection practices that provide the highest level of patient care. Both topics of botulinum toxin (Botox) and dermal fillers require ample anatomy-based instruction and clinical hands-on practice. It is not possible to obtain the depth of skill needed to be successful at both in a combined botox and dermal filler course. Our cosmetic injecting courses for dentists cover both the cosmetic uses of Botox, but also Botox for grinding. You can help preserve your patients teeth with our Dental Botox course for grinding.

Why should I learn to use a cannula for dermal filler?
When you undertake cosmetic injections, patient safety is the key to both great outcomes and reduction of risk.
Using a cannula to inject dermal filler will significantly reduce the risk of a vascular incident. In a recent study, the risk of a vascular incident when using a needle is 1:6410. However when using a cannula, the risk of a vascular incident (vascular occlusion) is around 1:40,882. This risk reduction is huge.
Whilst there may be occasions where the use of a needle is warranted, it is important that cosmetic injectors learn to use a cannula to deliver results in a safer way. The Global cosmetic injecting consensus is to use a cannula to improve patient safety and outcomes.
Cannula benefits:
- Improved safety
- Improved patient satisfaction due to increased comfort
- Reduced bruising
- One entry point for wide treatment area
- Change from superficial to deeper plane from one entry point
- Reduced incidence of vascular event/occlusion [Needle risk 1:6410], [Cannula risk 1:40,882]
- Multiple widths and lengths to suit all patients
- Increased perceived level of care by patients due to higher satisfaction and reduced pain
- Medical standard [Global injecting consensus compliant]

Can a dentist use Botox in Australia?
YES! It is in the scope of practice for a dentist to use botox as part of your dental treatment. There are a number of cosmetic uses of anti-wrinkle treatment, and we will teach you to assess the face, identity areas that you can assist your patient with, and treat within the scope of being a dentist. Our Botox courses for dentists include treatment for grinding and clenching too. Botox treatments that you can learn as a dentist include:
- Forehead
- Frown
- Crows feet
- Temporalis injections
- Nasal scrunch (bunny lines)
- Nefertiti lift
- Jowl lift
- Cobblestone chin
- Masseter injections for grinding
- Facial slimming
- Lip flip, Smokers lines
- Brow lift, and more ++

Ideal candidates for anti-wrinkle injections are those who have dynamic wrinkles that are visible when their face is moving. For patient that have deeper, static wrinkles (which are present even when the face isn’t moving), they may require a combination of dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle treatments to achieve the desired outcome, and we will teach you how to identify what will work best for different facial shapes. Your patients will benefit from you attending our Botox course for dentists.

I only want to use Botox therapeutically. What course do I take?
There is significant overlap between aesthetic and therapeutic treatments. Therapeutic treatment can have aesthetic side effects and vice versa. A thorough understanding of how the two are related is required for effective and appropriate treatment. Our Botox course for dentists will teach you both the functional and cosmetic use to assist your patients.
Both therapeutic and aesthetic uses work synergistically for your patients. Precise anatomical placement and proper dosage is required in each case.
Frown treatment can assist in tension release for grinding and clenching patients, and facial slimming use of botox will also reduct wear and pressure on the teeth therapeutically.
To learn both cosmetic and therapeutic use of botox, Dentists should enrol in the Level A: Botulinum Toxin course.
How do botox and dermal fillers help cosmetic dentistry?
Botox and dermal fillers combine with cosmetic dentistry to finesse and deliver the full result to the patient. Cosmetic dental restorations and orthodontic treatments can deliver great results, but may not be able to finalise the soft tissue conditions. Without cosmetic injectable treatments, you will be confined to intra oral treatments, relying on the patient to seek other practitioners to complete their cosmetic transformation. Our cosmetic injecting courses for dentists cover all uses of Botox and Dermal filler.
By undertaking cosmetic injectable training, not only do you control the dental and orthodontic components for the patient, but also the soft tissue draping. Many authors have traversed the divide between what was once in the domain of cosmetic doctors and cosmetic dentists, and have recognised that cosmetic injectors can be from a variety of educational and vocational backgrounds. We all have one thing in common; "Great results for all patients, safely".

Can I call myself a 'cosmetic injector'?
We recommend that when using the title Cosmetic Injector you add your official dental title or post-nominals to make it clear what your qualifications are. Cosmetic injecting requires proper training, insurance and observing the guidelines and requirements of AHPRA. The risks must be explained to the patient, along with achieving consent in a face-to-face dental visit in your dental practice, no different to your usual daily dentistry activities.
To understand Dermal Distinction Training Academy's position here, let us look at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Dr Ken Loi, The NSW RACS committee chairman, said "titles such as 'cosmetic consultant' or 'practitioner' do not have the same impact as 'cosmetic surgeon': because the moment you mention surgery your mindset is already having surgery. But being a consultant or a practitioner you are not necessarily having surgery by a surgeon." Therefore the use of the descriptive title 'cosmetic injector' does not bear this weight of confusion to the patient, and there are no restrictions on the use of this title.
Scope of practice: Can I do injectables?
AHPRA have included the use of dermal filler and botulinum toxin in the documents for dentists. Throughout our cosmetic injecting courses for dentists, we will be clear in the use of Botox and filler for dentists. It is important that you continue to provide all the relevant examinations and provide information to patients when considering any treatment option, including botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. To read the fact sheet on botulinum toxin and dermal filler AHPRA documents, visit here.
You should use the AHPRA reflective practice tool when evaluating treatments that you perform within your scope of practice. This can be found here.
When considering learning new skills, you should investigate whether you can obtain insurance, and what support you will receive after training to ensure that you can remain competent in those procedures. We offer free mentorship following training to assist your cosmetic injecting journey.
Bring a team member
When you add treatments to your practice, you need to make sure your whole team understands the workflow, how to deal with patient questions and how to set up your practice. When you bring a team member along, you have a head start into the area of cosmetic injecting. We will teach your staff:- How to set up the treatment room
- Product supplies and ordering
- Social media marketing
- Website advertising
- Answers to frequently asked questions
- How to bring up the conversation
